In medicine, what does MRI stand for?

If you’re like me, you’re just waiting for the day when your doctor finally whips out a tricorder. No more annoying, probing exams — just a quick scan and all that ails you is revealed.

The problem is that our actual technology is nowhere near that level. Pretty annoying, but it’s the truth. Still, there are some things in medicine that are pretty impressive. If we’re looking for something that can get us at least close to a tricorder, it’s the MRI, which can actually see inside your body.

I don’t know what tricorders run in the 23rd century, but I do know that getting an MRI today is pretty damn expensive. Still, that’s what we have to work with, so I guess we’ll have to take it. What does MRI actually stand for?
