When did the Berlin Wall fall?
If you’ve ever won a trivia night with friends, you know how hard it is to split up a prize. Most often, it’s easier to just make it as close to half and half as possible. That was basically the approach the Western allies and the Soviet Union took to Germany after WWII.
So maybe it was a little more complicated than that, but it’s pretty wild to think that for most of us, our lifetimes overlapped with a time when Germany was two countries, and Berlin was literally split in two by a really long wall.
By the ‘80s, the political winds were shifting and that setup wasn’t really working for Germans anymore. The East German government eventually gave in to citizen pressure and announced their residents could start traveling to West Germany — but forgot to mention there were still some restrictions. People began amassing at the Berlin Wall, and pretty soon it came crumbling down.
